It goes without saying that patient safety has always been a #1 priority at OldTown Smiles. It’s also always been part of our mission to give patients the best possible experience in a relaxing, comfortable environment. Dr. Seema Ahmed also makes it point to offer patients the latest in state-of-the-art dental technology.
And, while COVID has changed many aspects of day-to-day life, it hasn’t changed the principles that guide our practice. Patient safety and comfort are still paramount, and we’ve taken advantage of the latest research and technology to make sure that we are taking every precaution against COVID-19 transmission in our offices.
Luckily, the dentist’s office is one of the cleanest places you’ll visit. We’ve always worn masks! Instruments and surfaces have always been sterilized! However, Covid is a respiratory virus, and dental work requires that a patient is unmasked during treatment.
Since we know that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is mainly transmitted via respiratory droplets, either in the air or on surfaces, we’ve developed an exhaustive safety protocol. The most effective precautions are hand hygiene, social distancing, and personal protective equipment. (1) And, at OldTown Smiles, we’ve gone above and beyond current recommendations to institute best practices and effective precautions to make sure our patients are safe from the second they walk in the door, to the second they leave with clean, healthy teeth.
Before We Get Started
You may notice that our waiting room feels a little emptier. We’re limiting the number of patients we see, and coordinating appointments so that your exposure to other patients is minimized.
No Virus Out, No Virus In
Most mouthwashes are designed to kill bacteria, specifically the kinds that cause plaque and bad breath. While the average mouthwash shows reduced efficacy against covid-19, we utilize a molecular iodine rinse that has been proven to kill SARS-CoV-2 within 30 seconds. This “superhero” mouthwash is gentle to the inside of your mouth but strong enough to be a great tool against COVID-19 infections. (1) (2)
Take a Deep Breath
You won’t be able to see or taste our other powerful weapon against Covid, and you won’t be able to find it in many other dental offices in the state. Where you will find it: outer space! Our office is now using the Aerus ActivePure® Technology. Originally developed by NASA, this system actively disinfects the air, rather than just filtering it. Oxygen and water molecules are transformed into oxidative molecules that kill viruses and other contaminants both in the air and on surfaces. This system has been proven to eliminate up to 99.9% of airborne SARS CoV-2 in just 3 minutes.
Safety for All
While the ActivePure molecules are fighting any impurities, we’ll also be doing our part and diligently disinfecting all of our frequently touched surfaces every hour, on the hour. That includes doorknobs, credit card machines, keyboards, and other high-traffic areas.
We’re also doing everything we can to ensure that our staff remains protected, so that we stay healthy, and eliminate the risk of passing along any infection to our patients. We’re vigilant about wearing proper personal protective equipment. Our clinical staff will be attired in PPE that meets and exceeds the current safety guidelines. The staff that comes into close contact with any patient will be wearing protective coverings that include face masks, face shields, protective gowns, and as always, gloves. And, in keeping with the Center for Disease Control‘s recommendations for dental providers, our PPE will be discarded or sanitized after each patient.
Maintaining your dental health is a major part of your overall wellness. Our office is mindful of the scientific evidence that shows the connection between a healthy mouth and a healthy body. Dental health is so much more than just teeth. Science shows that periodontal disease is connected to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and even Alzheimers. By staying on top of, and exceeding official guidelines for protection against COVID, we’ll make sure that you stay healthy and have a beautiful smile.
