Sedation Dentistry

Dental work is a crucial part of maintaining a bright, healthy smile. Unfortunately, many adults and children experience so much anxiety toward the dental chair that they avoid seeing their dentist all together! We offer a variety of safe, highly customizable sedation dentistry options to help you overcome anxiety and receive your dental care in absolute comfort.

We are happy to offer the best, most relaxed dental care with the complimentary services on our Comfort Menu.

Sedation dentistry is an excellent choice for patients who feel afraid of dental work, have issues with their gag reflex, fear novocaine injections, worry about becoming adequately numb during a procedure, or have special needs.

Types of Sedation

Patients interested in comfortable, stress-free dental work can receive their preferred level of sedation with a tailored combination of the following:

Oral Conscious Sedation

Patients have the option of taking a pill an hour before their appointment, which will effectively calm their fear and anxiety so that they can comfortably receive their dental work. This sedation method will allow you to communicate with the dentist as necessary. Patients can request a dosage that is safe but high enough to induce mild amnesia following the procedure, a desired outcome for patients with extreme anxiety.

Nitrous Oxide

This is a combination of nitrous and oxygen, also known as laughing gas. Nitrous Oxide is administered through a nasal cannula and will keep patients happy, calm, and comfortable during their dental work. The gas can be adjusted to the sedation level that is appropriate for the patient. The effects of the nitrous oxide will fade away as soon as the patient removes the cannula.

IV Sedation

IV sedation will keep patients calm and unaware of the dental work that they are receiving. IV sedation can be adjusted to achieve the patient’s desired level of relaxation.

General anesthesia

General anesthesia will achieve a state of unconsciousness. This is a good option for patients who are receiving more involved dental work, like wisdom teeth removal, or who have a high tolerance for pain medication or sedatives.

The above methods can be adjusted or combined to achieve the right level of sedation for you. Patient’s sedation can be:

  • Minimal, which will keep you awake but relaxed.
  • Moderate, during which you will be highly relaxed and able to communicate, though your speech may be slurred, and amnesia of the treatment may occur.
  • Deep, which will keep you nearly unconscious but able to be woken and consulted with as necessary.

Patients can also opt for complete unconsciousness with general anesthesia, for appropriate procedures.

Dr. Kitchen or Dr. Ahmed will be happy to go over your treatment preferences with you during a private consultation at Old Town Smiles.
