Why might I need oral surgery?

We get it – to many people, the term “oral surgery” can sound serious, painful, and extensive. But that isn’t usually the case. While it is true that some oral surgery can be more serious, such as for oral cancer patients or patients who have experienced severe trauma, most patients undergo oral surgery to address more common dental conditions, such as removal of severely decayed or cracked teeth, infection, or replacing a lost tooth. Oral surgery can provide a solution to both long-standing as well as sudden dental issues and keep them from worsening in the future. Additionally, oral surgery  can restore the form and function of your mouth, as there are a variety of minor surgical procedures that can be very important to restoring optimal oral health. We are here to help you determine what procedure might benefit you.

Cutting-Edge Technology

We are proud to be one of the only offices in the area, and among only 10% of offices in the United States, to have an in-house cone-beam CT (CBCT) scanner.  Our CBCT scanner utilizes cutting-edge technology to take a 3D x-ray of your mouth, teeth, and jaw, allowing our team to fully diagnose and visualize your condition, as well as plan the most precise and predictable procedure possible.

Standard Extractions

There are a variety of reasons you may benefit from tooth removal. These reasons may include teeth that are severely damaged, fractured, or decayed beyond repair. This may also be necessary to facilitate orthodontic movement, or for periodontal concerns such as looseness. Regardless of your situation, our team is well-equipped to take care of your standard extractions with a focus on patient comfort and safety, using precise techniques to remove teeth when necessary.

Wisdom Tooth Extractions

The philosophy in the dental profession regarding wisdom tooth removal has changed a lot over the last several decades. However, if you are a candidate for wisdom tooth removal due to jaw development concerns, hygiene or periodontal issues, decay issues, or any other reason, we can help you. Our extraction process is smooth and efficient, ensuring that you will be as comfortable as possible during your procedure. We also offer various levels of sedation to make the experience even more relaxing.

Snap-On Implant-Supported Overdenture

Discover the transformative power of snap-on implant-supported overdentures at our office. Offering a secure and comfortable fit, this innovative solution enhances chewing ability and boosts confidence by snapping onto implants for a natural-looking smile. Experience the perfect blend of function and aesthetics with our expertly designed overdentures.

Bone Grafting and ridge preservation

When a tooth is lost, the surrounding bone often shrinks in response. This can lead to a collapsed area in the jaw, which can affect your ability to get a dental implant as a tooth replacement. In severe cases, it can even alter your facial appearance when multiple teeth are lost. To help avoid this issue and to help preserve the structure of the jaw, many patients benefit from bone grafting and ridge preservation at the time of tooth removal. A special bone product, along with collagen, is used in these cases to provide additional support for jawbone stability as well as for potential dental implants.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are the gold standard in tooth replacement, as they are the most durable, long-lasting, and biocompatible option available in modern dentistry. Dental implants can be used to securely replace anywhere from a single missing tooth, to an entire mouth with no remaining natural teeth. We use the most cutting-edge technology available to plan your dental implant surgery for maximum success. Implants provide a stable foundation for replacement teeth and help to preserve facial structure.

"All-On-X" Hybrid implant prosthesis

If you are or soon will be missing all of your teeth in either your upper or lower jaw, a full replacement with dental implants is the most secure option that modern dentistry has to offer. This process, called the "all-on-X" implant-supported hybrid prosthesis, uses very sophisticated, advanced techniques to surgically plan, design, and support a full set of dental implants and prosthetics, providing maximum functionality and aesthetics, very similar to natural teeth.

The Oral Surgery Treatment Process

Treatment Planning & Preparation

Dr. Ahmed and Dr. Barra will use various diagnostic tools to walk you through your treatment goals, the proposed oral surgery related to the treatment plan, what to expect the day of the procedure and afterward, and how to best prepare. They will suggest whether you may benefit from sedation to make your procedure more comfortable, based on the extent of your surgery as well as your personal preferences, and answer any questions you may have about your procedure.

Day of Surgery

Depending on the type of surgery as well as the type of sedation you will be receiving, your dentist will discuss with you if you will need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment on the day of your surgery. Most patients should plan for a day off to recover from the procedure and to ensure your body has adequate time to rest. It is often best to have someone be with you for the rest of the day after your surgery. Please make sure you follow all of the instructions you receive at the time of your surgery, for best results.

Healing & Aftercare

Oral surgery needs time for adequate recovery, just as surgery anywhere else in the body needs! Give yourself ample time to recover after your oral surgery. The exact timeline may vary from person to person, based on the extent of the procedure you had done as well as your healing capacity and general health. Most swelling and discomfort peaks within one to three days after the procedure, and can remain swollen for a period of time before it begins to dissipate. This is a normal and expected reaction, and you will be given specific instructions to follow that relate to your particular procedure. At a minimum, remember to keep your head elevated, use ice packs to reduce swelling, and maintain a soft food diet for at least 48 hours after surgery. Remember to take any medications exactly as directed by your dentist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Check out these frequently asked questions, or call us to speak with our team.

How long does oral surgery take?

It completely depends on the procedure and the complexity of your case. Simpler procedures, such as tooth extractions, can take minutes; more time may be needed to properly sedate you. Complex procedures, like placing dental implants for a full arch or multiple teeth, can take hours. Your dentist will give you a thorough explanation of the procedure, tell you how to properly prepare, and let you know what to expect on the day.

How much does oral surgery cost?

The cost of oral surgery varies from procedure to procedure. Similar to time commitment, simpler surgeries will be less of a financial commitment than more complex surgeries. If your dental and/or medical insurance does not cover your anticipated oral surgery, we can work with you to help you get third party financing or help you consider a loan, if necessary, to get the care you need. There are always options available.

Is oral surgery covered by insurance?

Possibly, depending on your insurance provider and coverage. You should talk to your dental and medical insurance providers ahead of time, to see if your recommended oral surgery is covered. It may also be worthwhile to file your claim with both your dental insurance provider and your medical insurance provider, since the surgery may qualify as a medically necessary procedure. We can help give you specific advice on this based on your particular procedure. As always, we will file a courtesy claim on your behalf to help maximize the reimbursement you will receive.
